I had a question a long time ago, and no one could give me the answer until I came across this book.
My question is: For example, if I do one thing or learn something new, no matter how hard I try, I can’t get good grades. How do I know if I’m not trying hard enough? Or am I really untalented?
The message of this book is very simple and straightforward, which is Grit plays a very important role in the road to success.
Everyone has a different definition of “success”, and are you persistent enough is the key. But when most people see other people succeed, their first reaction is usually: “You are very talented!” instead of “You must have put in a lot of hard work!”
The author is a psychologist. She has done and read a lot of research, which proves that EFFORT count TWICE! Just because you are talented does not mean you will be successful, but your efforts will not be in vain.
The book gives many examples of successful people, such as Olympic athletes who start practicing at 4:00 every morning and practice XX hours a week. Remember, anyway, it is telling you to be persistent, don’t give up!
On the contrary, I think the most useful thing is to teach people how to cultivate grit.
There are 4 steps: 1. Interest 2. Practice 3. Purpose 4. Hope
Many people have stopped at the second step. Looking at it, I found that I was a typical example of three-minute enthusiasm. When I feel that I seem to be interested in XX, I plunge into it, and then encounter difficulties, and I have many excuses in my heart, such as “it seems not worth spending so much time”, “Why can’t I solve this problem? Maybe I’m not really good at this”. No sustained practice, no sense of success, give up, and the cycle continues.
To be successful, you must overcome difficulties. There is no shortcut.
Going back to my original question, the author believes that when you start something, it does not mean that you have to persevere forever. If you obviously know that you don’t have a great interest, it is okay to give up early and find another interest. But if you know that you are interested, but give up because of difficulties, then you are not strong enough.
I also think that there are some things that I want to do very much, and I do it naturally without being reminded by others, and I will not get bored after doing it for a long time. It is probably the budding period of an interest. But after germination, it must be carefully cultivated, and finally it will bloom and bear fruit.
