Easy Five Spice Tofu in 15 Minutes

As a 2 people small family, I usually cook 3 dishes for dinner – One saucy main, one stir-fry veg, and one easy dish. This five spice tofu falls in the third category.

What is Chinese Five Spice?

Chinese five spice is a handy seasoning powder just like the Indian garam masala, and it’s available in many supermarkets.

Although different makers have their own recipes, the main 3 spices should be star anise, cinnamon and fennel; the remaining 2 can be clove, peppercorn, black or white pepper, or ginger. I personally like this one with ginger that the flavour suits me the best.

But I don’t recommend buying something mix with sugar, salt, onion or garlic powder. Especially when the first ingredient is SUGAR like this one! it’s just, wrong.

If you have a spice grinder or pestle and mortar, you can even make your own!

So, when you have Chinese five spice on hand, making this five spice tofu can be VERY EASY and QUICK! Just coat it on the tofu with cornstarch, dip into the egg, then fry! That’s it.

Ingredients

  • 200 g firm tofu
  • Chinese five spice powder
  • 1-2 tbsp corn flour (corn starch)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp water
  • ¼ tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp oyster sauce

How To Make Five Spice Tofu in 15 Minutes

  1. Cut the tofu into blocks and pat dry. Mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar and water in a small bowl.
  2. Season the tofu with five spice powder, then coat with cornstarch and dip into the beaten egg.
  3. Heat 1-2 tbsp of oil in a pan, fry the tofu until both sides turned golden.
  4. Pour over step 1 seasoning liquid onto the tofu, and cook until the liquid reduce a bit to your liking. Enjoy!
