Beautiful Moments in Taichung (Taiwan)

2025, June. The more I travel, the more I realise that nature is the best companion. If I were to understand this earlier, I’d have visited Alishan and left behind all the good food in Taichung city centre. But even so, weather is a different thing. Isn’t it?

I should be grateful that everything went smoothly — except one day, we struggled to grab a taxi to Chung Tai Chan Monastery in pouring rain, yet it was the most memorable of our trip. When do you insist on going out in such warning weather, only to see some Buddha figurines, and you’re not into Buddhism? We just did! More on that later.

Sun Moon Lake offers many hiking trails for cyclists and walkers. We did the Nine Frogs Trail (Shuiwatou hiking trail), and saw a foreign family bringing 2 very small kids on bikes, while we included 2 elderly, indulged ourselves slowly into the stunning view and peaceful vibe.

↓ Let me be clear: these pictures don’t do justice. What you’re looking at is the sheer of the most impressive tourist attraction during this Taichung trip — Chung Tai Chan Monastery, located in Puli town, a short drive from Sun Moon Lake. It is modern and solemn and very much different than the others, built by the architect C.Y. Lee, who also built Taipei 101.

If you get a chance to visit, be sure to book the free guided tour. It allows you to visit exclusive upper floors with a few extravagant Buddhist figures. I’ve never seen such a scale and grandness.

Taichung is a beautiful city. Not only surrounded by the poetic Sun Moon Lake but also the scenic Alishan mountains, ever-popular Gaomei Wetlands, and picturesque farmlands. But I find the warmest are the Taiwanese people — the nerve-soothing gentle tone, eager to help and be considerate to other people. Since living abroad for so many years, I have met different Taiwanese from Japan, Germany, and now in Taichung; I’ve never met one Taiwanese whom I don’t like. Except strangers, of course. You know what I mean.

Oh yes! One more thing about Taichung (or Taiwan) is the food (and drinks!). A huge array of iced tea and local food dazzling in bustling streets — no need to mention the most sought-after Taiwan night markets. The price seems really reasonable when it comes to a person who is living in the UK. The hotel we stayed in the city even provides complimentary sweets and supper. Can you believe that?

Tips for Taichung Travel

I think Taiwan is the right fit for us, considering Curry Boy can visit visa-free, there are low-cost flights to/from HK; low language barrier, and it’s like a small Japan! Here are a few tips for you after our travelling experience.

Shuttle bus to Sun Moon Lake

If you’re planning to take the shuttle bus provided by 台灣好行 to Sun Moon Lake, be aware that it’s a 9-seated minibus on a first-come-first-served basis. We couldn’t find any sign board for this bus but eventually figured out it usually parks on bay 4. I recommend queuing there as soon as you arrive at the airport, although I was told by the airport staff that hardly anybody takes this shuttle bus. Check the latest bus timetable here.

Cash in Hand

Many shops and street stalls still only accept cash. Digital payment is getting popular but usually limited to Line Pay (continue to read below). Moreover, assuming that you know EasyCard (a smart card system especially for transportation), you can buy a ticket with cash but not a credit card.

SIM Card with Local Number

As mentioned above, a SIM card with a local number allows you to make payments with Line Pay. Besides, it helps to call a taxi when Uber abandons you. From our experience, at least one person having a local number is recommended.
