Throughout my life, food always leads me to new places – find one good restaurant, then I’ll see what’s nearby. Here in Bristol it is also the same.

Lazy Lobster, a MICHELIN-listed restaurant caught my attention soon after I moved to Bristol from Germany. But it is located 10 miles south of Bristol’s centre, a small town called Chew Magna. It’s too stupid to go by public transportation, until we have a car!

Nowadays, small plates are in fashion, and so is seafood.

Oh Seafood! How Good (But Small) Are You…

Here, in Lazy Lobster, it was serving 10 small plates.

If you want something different/seasonal, there is also a special menu to choose from.

The staff recommended 2–3 plates for a person, and we ended up ordering as below:

Griddled monkfish with clams.
Griddled monkfish with squid ink gnocchi, clam, Pernod + saffron velouté £15

The food was tasty, especially the seafood itself. The red mullet and monkfish both had a nice charred colour and not overcooked; The crab fritters had a popped crab flavour but not lobster.

I liked the cooking, but I guess the portion was still a bit smaller than imagined, though small plates were well noted.

Like the monkfish with gnocchi, I was literally asking Curry Boy ‘where is the gnocchi?’ ‘Here! The black one!’ ‘Oh…3 pieces…’

Trust me, order some bread and you won’t regret it.

Be Smart to Choose…

One more dish we ordered was this one:

Small pieces of griddled octopus.
Griddled octopus, red Leicester pomme purée, picallili £13.75

I was stunned, then disappointed.

The octopus was nice but it was like my finger-size. And it also didn’t match with the mashed cheese. No wonder Curry Boy said, ‘Here they don’t get octopus! Must be imported and expensive.’ I guess he is right.

Below was a roasted octopus we had in Lisbon. Similar price but double the size……(Well, I know I can’t compare like this, but I can’t help)

My Little Recommendation

If you want to avoid any size shock, I recommend ordering shellfish like oyster, prawn, lobster, or a whole fish, then you’ll have an idea how big the food is. And I bet they won’t give you half an oyster lol!

All in all, it’s worth trying out Lazy Lobster if you’re living around Bristol. The seafood was good, just bear in mind that they are small plates, and don’t lose temper when you see 3 octopus fingers.

Where to Go After

Just a 5-min drive from Lazy Lobster is the beautiful Chew Valley Lake! Plenty of parking space as well!

Chew Valley Lake is located in south of Bristol.
A sunny day on Chew Valley Lake.
A pleasant walk around Chew Valley Lake.
Pleasant walk and less people!

Probably you can’t feel the water power here. You’ve to go see it!

There are some seating areas near the only restaurant there – Salt and Malt, where you can grab fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches, ice-cream and coffee. You can let the kids release their endless energy in the playground while you’re resting.

Along the lake is mostly-paved path where it is easy to walk even on a rainy day. Without any specific things to do, just following the waves under a mild sun, with a few clouds floating on a blue sky, isn’t it a great way to end a good day?
