British minty mushy peas is a classic side dish of pies and fish n chips. Do you know you don’t have to use fresh peas? Because frozen peas work well and much more budget-friendly!

Mushy Peas – a Side, a Dip, a Beautiful Green

First time I tried mushy peas was in a British pie restaurant called Pieminister. It’s a side dish which you can choose to pair with any pie. By that time, I didn’t find it very tasty, I mean, nothing special, probably because the peas’ flavour was covered by the gravy. But then I looked online, knowing that it’s a classic side dish, usually pairs with pies, fish n chips or meat, gives a lovely vibrant colour, and super easy to cook.

Mushy peas was hidden under the gravy, can you see that?

Quickly Cooked in 15 mins

Today, while I was roasting the cauliflower steaks, sweet potato wedges and fish fingers, I spent 15 mins to make this minty mushy peas. Just put the frozen peas, butter, mint, salt pepper, lemon juice all together in a small pot, simmer for 10 mins, then add crème fraîche to blend. Viola! It’s done!

To Anti-Mint Eater: It’s NOT Like Toothpaste

Are you an anti-mint eater? I was once. Mint was not my favourite herb at all, until I tried the SUPER TASTY Roasted Potatoes with Preserved Lemon and All-Purpose Yogurt Mint Sauce. If you use fresh mint leaves in an appropriate amount, it won’t become so minty that you feel like eating toothpaste. Instead, with a hint of mint flavour, it really brightens up the dish and makes you want to eat more!

A Small Note Before You Cook

I tried to use a fork to mash it, but it took too much effort and time, so I switched to a food processor, pressed a button, done!
